DALLAS – Leaders voted Tuesday to create an animal cruelty unit to prosecute the increasing number of animal abuse cases in Dallas County.
The idea came from Commissioner Elba Garcia who has partnered with Safer Dallas to raise the $200,000 necessary to pay the salary of the prosecutor and investigator assigned to the unit.
Commissioner Maurine Dickey and her husband contributed $40,000 to get the fund raising started.
“Our goal is simple. You know Dallas County will not tolerate animal cruelty anymore and those offenses will be prosecuted,” Garcia said.
More than 2,500 animal cruelty cases were prosecuted in the city of Dallas alone last year. That’s just one city in the county.
